Dozens of schools, from Santa Monica to Long Beach, are currently participating in the Water Campaign; investigating water quality issues in their community, developing sustainability solutions, and collaborating with like-minded students half way around the world. These Environmental Campaigns are made possible by partnerships with community-oriented organizations like the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County.

“The goal of Grades of Green’s Water Campaign is not only to teach students about their local water resources but also to teach students how to conserve water, recycle and save energy. Educating students through programs such as these furthers our mission of converting waste into resources in the communities we serve,” said Grace Robinson Hyde, Sanitation Districts’ Chief Engineer and General Manager.

The mission of LA County Sanitation is to protect the environment through innovative waste management. Empowering the youngest generation of activists to protect water and divert waste shows exactly how LA County Sanitation can put innovation into practice.

Boeing has extended their sustainability and innovation efforts by awarding a grant to Grades of Green, an environmental education nonprofit. The Boeing Corporation is helping make Grades of Green’s Water Campaign possible, providing environmental leadership resources for students around the world. Their eco-commitment doesn’t stop there – to reduce Boeing’s environmental footprint, facilities ship reusable plastic containers back to suppliers rather than to a landfill. A Boeing facility in Everett, Washington even uses wetlands to assist with storm water management at facilities and Boeing’s Santa Susana Field Laboratory was nationally recognized for their storm-water treatment systems.

Prioritizing water management aligns with Grades of Green’s Water Campaign. Student changemakers around the world research local environmental issues, innovate sustainable solutions, and educate their community on the importance of conservation. Students have successfully advocated for the ban of single use plastics in their district, secured reliable water sources, and made environmental sustainability second nature within their schools.

The Boeing Company’s commitment to the next generation of innovators is evident through their abundance of educational resources available on their website. Per Boeing’s 2018 Environmental Report, Boeing’s goal is to harness “the natural curiosity of young people through investments, partnerships and volunteerism to show them how science and engineering can help solve real-world problems.”

By sponsoring Grades of Green’s Water Campaign, The Boeing Company is committed to creating the next generation of environmental leaders. Join our next campaign [here] to be part of the movement!

Grades of Green is honored to mentor 20 Los Angeles schools competing in our 7th annual Trash Free Lunch Challenge! Each school participates by setting up a Grades of Green Team, and developing a waste reduction program consisting of Trash Free Lunches and Waste Sorting Stations. After conducting an eco-consultation at the beginning of the school year with their Grades of Green Advisor, each school received a customized report with recommendations for rolling out a sustainable, student led program. Each school then received a school-wide assembly to generate excitement around their waste reduction program and educate students on how to utilize their school’s new waste sorting station as well as pack trash free lunches.

All schools averaged a waste reduction rate of 67% on just their first day of kicking off the program! These rock star schools are collectively on track to divert a total of 4,950 pounds of waste from landfills every day. It’s now up to each school to continue educating their students, maintain their waste sorting stations, and improve their waste reduction rate. In March, a panel of environmental experts will decide which middle and elementary school will win the 2017-2018 Trash Free Lunch Challenge and take home a $1,000 grant to improve their environmental programs.

Thank you to our sponsors who helped make this year’s program possible: LA County Sanitation District, Lush, Northrop Grumman, LA County 3rd District, LA County 4th District, City of Santa Monica, Carton Council, Johnson Ohana Foundation, LA Kings Care Foundation

Grades of Green is thrilled to receive a generous donation from our friends at LAcarGuy’s Subaru Pacific dealership of $22,951! Subaru Pacific selected Grades of Green as one of the local charities they would support in the 2016 Share The Love campaign. Each time a customer purchased a new Subaru from the dealership, they were given the opportunity to give $250 to one of Subaru’s selected charities. Grades of Green has been honored to be one of two local charities chosen for the past few years. Subaru has been partnering with Grades of Green since 2013. Through the Share the Love campaign, Subaru customers have donated a total of approximately $60,000, which helped inspire and educate over 20,000 to care for the environment. Grades of Green is thrilled to partner with LAcarGuy and Subaru Pacific, and we thank them for their continued support!
