On Tuesday, April 15th, Grades of Green presented its “Costa Recycles” Program to the Manhattan Beach City Council.  The recycling program, a partnership between students from Grades of Green and Mira Costa High School, as well as Waste Management and Beach Cities Health District, has involved an eco-consultation from Grades of Green staff, the procurement of recycle containers thanks to Waste Management, and a waste audit where students sorted through one day’s worth of school trash.  The waste audit showed that 63% of waste could be recycled each day at Mira Costa, and the over 100 trash cans that currently exist on campus can be reduced to about 50 trash/recycle paired cans.  The city council was very supportive of this program and is looking forward to hearing the successes of the program upon implementation.  At the conclusion of the presentation, Mayor Hayworth awarded Grades of Green Youth Corps student Jane F. with a Certificate of Recognition from the City of Manhattan Beach thanking her for her environmental leadership in the community.
