Youth Corps student member Alex N is passionate about local, sustainable food, as well as waste reduction and environmental stewardship. In 2013, Alex introduced a 100 Mile Meal project at her school where students ate food that came from a 100 mile radius or less. This year, Alex has brought her passions together in the creation of her Youth Corps Green Project; creating her own blog! At Hungry Alex Eats, Alex offers fun, tasty recipes crafted from ingredients gathered at her local farmer’s market. Each week she visits farmer’s markets to meet the farmers and learn where their food comes from. Alex has taken her project to a whole new level – along with posting on her blog weekly, she also provides locally sourced, healthy meals to peers at her school each week. Thanks to a wonderful donation from Wean Green, Alex is able to make each meal trash free, meaning once the students enjoy their meal prepared by Alex they can return the containers to her to be reused. Alex is inspiring her school community to learn where their food comes from, support local farmers, choose foods that are delicious, healthy and make a low carbon footprint, and pack trash free!
