Thanks to the leadership of Grades of Green Youth Corps students Penn, Carter, Reese and Will the Grandview Elementary community is more eco-minded than ever! Penn worked with the Manhattan Beach Unified School District to get hydration stations, or water bottle refill stations, installed on campus. After researching possible options and making his recommendations on the locations for the hydration stations, the district was able to install two stations at the school! Penn also educated his peers about the benefits of using the hydration stations through morning announcements. Carter, Reese and Will, also known as the “Energy Detectives”, hosted a week long energy challenge for all of the second grade classrooms. The group gave a presentation to each of the five second grade classrooms to explain to students how they can save energy by completing Grades of Green’s Energy Challenge, and how they can save energy in class by reducing the amount of time that the lights are used. About 75% of students participated, and the classroom that saved the most energy during the week was rewarded with a Popsicle party. Interested in learning more about the Youth Corps? Click here!
