Why is it important to be litter-free? Just ask any of the 350 students who participated in the Grades of Green Hermosa Beach Anti-Litter Art Contest. Grades of Green partnered with Republic Services and the City of Hermosa Beach to spread the idea that a litter-free lifestyle positively impacts our environment.
Students were asked to draw pictures of why they felt it is so important for Hermosa Beach residents to be litter-free. The results were colorful depictions of how reducing trash and putting it in the proper receptacle helps protect sea animals, reduce beach trash and keep Hermosa Beach beautiful.
After the 10 finalists of the Anti-Litter Art Contest were chosen, the K-8 th grade students walked down Pier Avenue in Hermosa Beach distributing their artwork to local businesses. 44 out of 45 businesses displayed the artwork in the window as a reminder to residents and shop owners to stop littering and start reducing waste.
During Earth Month the posters proudly hung in store windows as a sign of the students’ environmental passion. The Anti-Litter Campaign has been successful in increasing awareness in the city about why it’s important to protect our environment and how easy it is to do so.
The winning students were honored at the City Council last month for their artistic environmental drawings. The Grades of Green organizers who created the art contest and campaign will be honored for their commitment to the environment and community on June 12th at the Hermosa Beach City Council.
