Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach, California conducted a waste audit where students and the Grades of Green team went through one days worth of lunchtime trash and sorted what was actually trash and what could have been recycled. The audit started with 32 bags of trash weighing in at 283 lbs. 13 students, one principal, and half an hour later there were only 12 bags of trash weighing 196 lbs and 16 bags of recyclables weighing 87 lbs, resulting in a potential trash bag diversion rate of 62%.
