Grades of Green 2012-2013 Trash Free Lunch Challenge Finalist, Riviera Elementary School, has made numerous improvements to their campus wide waste reduction program since competing in the Challenge. The school used their prize money from the Challenge as seed money to switch out the Styrofoam lunch trays to compostable trays. Thanks to the help of the City of Torrance, Riviera also introduced permanent sorting stations throughout campus. To celebrate their environmentally minded campus community, students participated in an art contest to design a mural made completely of plastic bottle caps. The winning design was chosen, and with the help of parent volunteers and the Green Team, the bottle cap mural was unveiled during a school wide assembly. The mural features over 300 pounds of bottle tops, all of which were collected by students. Congratulations Riviera Elementary on completing your wonderful bottle cap mural and all of your green efforts, which will inspire the community to reduce, reuse and recycle for years to come.
