Aerospace’s Environmental Impact
Aerospace, and thus, aviation, contributes to climate change and global warming due to its emission of carbon dioxide, ozone, and other vapors into the atmosphere. Aviation also creates noise pollution and water pollution due to runoff from airports. In 2019, commercial aviation emitted over 900 million metric tons of CO2. Because the earth is getting hotter, it takes more fuel for airplanes to take off, creating a vicious cycle. Aviation contributes around 3-5% of the total warming effect that causes climate change and in 2019 it contributed around 2% to global human-made CO2 emissions.
How Does Aerospace Affect Environmental Justice?
Noise and emissions from airplanes usually affect low-income communities and communities of color because most low-income families live around airports or flight paths. These air and water pollutants create negative health and lifestyle impacts on these communities.
What Can You Do to Support the Environment?
- Hydrogen gas, biofuel, and new aerodynamic design can substantially combat the negative env impacts of aerospace.
- Examples of Aerospace industries that are trying to become more sustainable include:
- Do your research. Even the Biden admin is aiming to reduce aviation admissions through sustainable fuel.
- Only fly when you need to. Flying itself creates an environmental impact. If you can use another mode of transportation or stay local, that will help the environment.
