On May 2nd at 1:30 P.M. Pacific Time, join us for our Final Webinar of the school year!

In the past year, our series of webinars aimed to teach leadership, communication, and community-building skills while implementing one of our 40 hands-on activities to take action at your school and in your community. If you’re looking to improve your environmental advocacy skills, review our past webinars like our “Create a Movement” and “Spread the Word” webinars!

For our Grand Finale, we’re bringing you tips and tricks from our rockstar panel of Grades of Green Advisors – live! If you’re interested in improving your actions, sustaining your environmental program for future generations, or you have any questions for our advisors, please join us on Facebook and we’ll do our best to answer your questions.

The panel of Advisors will answer questions and share feedback on carrying-on your environmental programs and activities over the summer and on-to the next school year! You can watch them on your own (as an individual student/educator) or with your entire Grades of Green Team!

We hope to see you all soon!

Maybe you’re interested in helping the environment and you don’t know what to do. You ask yourself, “what now?” Maybe you’re working on a Grades of Green activity but you don’t know where to start or how to expand your movement. Many students and leaders reach a point where they have an incredible idea or aspire to do more but don’t know how to make them a reality.

Rob Arnow didn’t let these doubts stop him. Rob previously worked as a freelance illustrator for Apple, the Washington Post, IBM, and many other influential organizations. Despite his busy schedule, Rob always made time for his true passion: political activism.

He campaigned for political and environmental issues, bringing these topics to the attention of his colleagues. His work even brought public campaign financing to the San Francisco mayoral race. Along the way, he experienced hardship and rejection, but he kept fighting for these issues.

Activist, Rob Arnow! is now the Founder and Creative Director of Incitement Design, where he combines his illustration background with activism. So why are we talking about Rob? Because Rob knows how hard it can be to start a movement and he is going to join us and share his story on our February 1st “Create a Movement Webinar!”

Stop whatever you’re doing and make some time on February 1st on your calendar and join us at 12 PM EST on Facebook in our “Create a Movement Webinar!” The “Create a Movement Webinar” addresses the first steps to starting your environmental and political activities and maximizing your impact. The Webinar will be on Facebook after the livestream so that you can watch it at your own leisure.

Stay tuned and get ready to be inspired!

Thinking about taking on a Grades of Green Activity? Maybe it’s your first Activity or one of many Activities you’re planning for this school year. No matter where in the world you are or whichever step in your Activity you’re on, join us for our upcoming webinar series! The series is created to teach leadership, communication, and community-building skills while implementing a hands-on activity to take action at your school. These 4 webinars will help you take on any of our 40+ Activities. We recommend watching all 4 webinars since they cover different topics. You can watch them on your own (as an individual student/educator) or with your entire Grades of Green Team. Mark your calendars for the webinars listed below! Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Leftover School Supplies webinar recently! We’ve uploaded and embedded the full webinar video to this post.

Our Facebook Live Webinar highlighting our Leftover School Supplies Activity was one of our best yet!  We let everyone know about the importance of reusing school supplies, gave eye-opening stats on landfill waste, and shared our top five tips on implementing the activity.

Did you know that over 2 billion pencils are used each year, which requires wood from almost 100,000 trees! This statistic is crazy!!! Statistics like this demonstrate just how important reusing your school supplies really is. And, the Leftover School Supplies Activity is fun, quick, and easy to implement.

Additionally, any school that takes on the Leftover School Supplies Activity and emails their Grades of Green Advisor the number of bags of leftover school supplies they collected will get Grades of Green T-Shirts for their Green Team leader!

What’s greener than no idle zones in schools? No idle zones in car dealerships! In celebration of Earth Month, LAcarGUY is setting a new auto industry standard by introducing the very first No Idle Service Center in all 11 of their South Bay dealerships. As one of Grades of Green’s longtime supporters, LAcarGUY has helped dozens of schools take on the No Idle Zone activity to educate parents and students on why it’s important to reduce carbon emissions and unnecessary idling. As green leaders of the auto industry, LAcarGUY is showing just why they are on the forefront of environmental sustainability. Way to go LAcarGUY! Interested in implementing a no idle zone in your school? Check out Grades of Green’s No Idle Zone Activity for a step-by-step guide on how to roll out a successful program and don’t forget to watch our recent webinar to learn how one small and simple change can make a positive impact on the environment.

Many of you are probably planning for or in the process of putting together your Earth Day festivities. Here’s one way to kick off next month: on Wednesday, April 5th at 7pm Eastern Standard Time, The Bard Center for Environmental Policy will host a free online screening of “Priceless,” which is an episode from the National Geographic series, Years of Living Dangerously. The documentary series sheds light on the impacts of climate change and the solutions that individuals, communities, companies, and even governments are using. This episode highlights both carbon pricing and the biodiversity loss threat from climate change. The screening will be followed by an expert panel discussion where they will welcome audience questions. For more information, please click here.

You can sign up here to receive more information about the screening, including the link to the show and webinar, by filling out this RSVP form.

If you are in the New York City area, you can attend the event live on Bard College’s NYC campus (just be sure to fill out the relevant section on the RSVP form).

Preview content from the episode featuring Aasif Mandvi (The Daily Show) and Nikki Reed (The Twilight Saga).

Ready to raise awareness about and inspire appreciation for our planet? After you register your school on Grades of Green, you’ll unlock 40+ activities including our Earth Day Celebrations activity.

– What pollutants can we measure & how?
There are a variety of air quality monitors that measure specific pollutants. This is air quality monitor was recently recommended to us by the folks at Coalition for Clean Air: http://www.purpleair.org/. They tell us that these devices are pretty reliable and are tested as very accurate by AQMD. They retail for $180 though schools might be able to ask for a discount.

– How can we keep students safe?
If students are involved, have a sign-up sheet to keep track of how many students will be helping out. Go over protocols such as what you’ll be doing and provide safety tips. One helpful tip is designating a space for everyone holding signs to stand in that’s slightly further away from the drop-off/pick-up zone. You can make this space by using safety cones or draw out the area in chalk.

– Need further clarification or have additional questions?
Feel free to send an email to info@gradesofgreen.org or email your school’s personal Grades of Green advisor.

Grades of Green is excited to host its first ever webinar on Facebook Live about improving air quality through establishing a No Idle Zone! Schools across the country are invited to join us on February 22nd as we explain the dangers of toxic car emissions and how students, parents, teachers and volunteers can take action to spread awareness about air pollution and improve their school environment. The Webinar is a great way to help schools implement Grades of Green’s No Idle Zone Activity, with step-by-step instructions to encourage drivers to turn off car engines as they wait at school drop-off and pick-up areas. According to Hamilton County Environmental Services and Air Watch Northwest, 3 pounds of pollution per month is put into the air for just one vehicle drop-off and pick-up at a school. Reducing idling on school campuses greatly reduces emissions, which also shrinks the school’s carbon footprint and helps clear the air our children breathe. Through the interactive webinar, participants will be able to post comments in real time on Facebook and ask Grades of Green experts questions as we go, creating a dialogue that will give everyone the tools that they need to jumpstart the Activity. We are excited to offer the first 20 schools that join the webinar and take on the No Idle Zone Activity a FREE banner that students can display in front of their schools to remind drivers to turn off their engines
