U.S. Department of Education Tours Three Grades of Green Green Ribbon Schools

During the week of September 16th, the U.S. Department of Education visited three Grades of Green schools that all won Green Ribbon Awards in 2012 or 2013. These schools are Grades of Green pilot Grand View Elementary School in Manhattan Beach, California and Longfellow Elementary School and Hughes Middle School both in Long Beach, California. Youth Corps members Evie (Grand View), Alex (Longfellow), and Aidan, Antonio, Licia, Toni, Mary-Kate, and Chloe (Hughes) were all a part of their school’s Green Teams that helped their school achieve the Green Ribbon Award and lead the tours. All three of these schools reduced their environmental impact and costs, improved their health and wellness of the whole school, staff, and students, and provided effective environmental and sustainability literacy by incorporating STEM and green career pathways.
